In the last five years, Suniel Shetty has mostly been seen in cameos and special appearances in films. He was last seen in a prominent role in 2014. But, he is all set to make a comeback in a big way in the huge budgeted multilingual movie, Marakkar: The Lion of the Arabian Sea. After the Baahubali series from Telugu cinema, 2.0 from Tamil cinema and KGF: Chapter 1 from Kannada cinema, it’s time for Malayalam film industry to deliver a mega-budget extravaganza.
Directed by Priyadarshan, with whom Suniel Shetty has done several films in the past including Hera Pheri, Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar, Hulchul, De Dana Dan, among others, Marakkar: The Lion of the Arabian Sea also stars Mohanlal and Arjun Sarja. According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, the movie is based on the life of Navy chief, Mohammed Ali aka Kunjali Marakkar IV. The lead role will be played by Mohanlal and Suniel Shetty will be seen in the role of a 16th-century warrior in the Rs 150 crore budgeted movie.
A source told “Suniel and Priyadarshan are teaming up for their most ambitious collaboration, 10 years after De Dana Dan. Suniel’s look is inspired by the Hollywood war film, Troy, while his character has its muse in a real-life personality who has been fictionalised for cinematic purpose. He has a lot of sword fights and hand combats.”

The source further added, “The three actors—Mohanlal, Prabhudheva, Suniel Shetty—will shoot together at Ramoji Film City for 85-90 day schedule.” The movie, as the title suggests, will mostly be based on the water hence artificial sea has been created with vintage warships.

As far as the VFX and special effects of the movie are concerned, “An international studio will work on the visual effects for almost a year as the plan is to bring the Zamorin war with the Portuguese to the screen as authentically as possible.”

The shoot of the film will reportedly be wrapped by April-end however due to heavy VFX work, the makers are eyeing for mid-2020 release. The movie will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam and makers are also keen on roping in a known Chinese actor for a pivotal part, keeping into consideration a China release.
