With just 10 days left for the year 2018 to end, it is time for everyone including the Khans to probably reflect on their choice of movies. While Ayushmann Khurrana, Vicky Kaushal, Rajkummar Rao rose from the ashes in the last two years, this year in particular saw a major downfall for Khans- who have been ruling the box office for over decades now. Be it Salman Khan’s Race 3 or Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero or even Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan, all of the above movies were mounted on a huge scale but failed to grab attention.
It all started with Salman Khan’s Race 3 which released on Eid and failed to break even. The movie with a stellar cast consisting of Anil Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandes, among others released amidst huge hype given that this was the first time Salman joined the Race franchise. While the movie did open to a bumper response given Salman’s stardom, it lost its steam in mere three days. The movie was touted to be one of biggest disasters and Twitter agrees to it. While the critics trashed the movie left, right and centre, audience including Salman fans couldn’t take the movie themselves and even wrote open letters to Khan.
Secondly, it was adventure action film Thugs of Hindostan which released during Diwali. Despite having the advantage of the festive holiday, the movie which marked the coming together of two stalwarts of the industry, Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, failed to impress at the box office. The movie also starred Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles. The movie did open to a great first day response, but the second day saw a 50% decline and the same followed in the weeks to come. Aamir’s act as Firangi Mallah did get appreciation, but the story as a whole did not work for the audience and critics alike.
SHAH RUKH KHAN
Most recently, it is Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero which released just a day ago. The movie also starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma opened to mixed response. While critics have appreciated the first half, the second half was a let-down, according to most of the critics. The movie opened to a figure of around Rs 20 crore which is very less considering the starcast. While the total business of the movie will be known by the end of this week, it doesn’t look like a good news to the makers.
